The more often we can anchor ourselves in compassion and forgiveness, the more able we are to address these very serious problems we face as a human race.
Video Interview Transcript
I think spirituality is really essential to the peace process. My definition of spirituality is engagement with noble human qualities like love and compassion and forgiveness. And fortunately for us, human beings, there are an infinite number of ways to do that. So the more ways that we can find to be spiritual I think the better off we are and in that sense I'm viewed as a Buddhist, I'm inspired by the teachings of Jesus Christ. I'm inspired by the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad -Peace Be Upon Him- and I'm inspired by the Talmud and the Torah and in all forms of human spirituality.
I think there's core common threads in spirituality that even if you're like a secular humanist and you don't believe in any kind of higher power you still are moved by compassion. You're moved by forgiveness. And the more often we can anchor ourselves in those noble human qualities, the more spiritual we become and the more able we are to address these very serious problems we face as a human race.
